Upgrade calculator
The blacksmith upgrades gear to +12. Success chances by target level: +1 100%, +2 100%, +3 100%, +4 100%, +5 75%, +6 50%, +7 40%, +8 30%, +9 20%, +10 10%, +11 100%, +12 100%. Gold is item level × 4 × the target level squared (doubled for ancients), and the materials scale with the square too. The blacksmith panel takes a freshly rolled item of your choice and upgrades it at the real odds, showing which stats each level raises. The upgrading guide covers when it is worth it.

A failed attempt still spends the gold and materials but never lowers the item's level.
11,253,267On average, counting the failed tries: each step's cost divided by its success chance.
Each level to +10 adds 5% of the rolled value to two modifiers in turn, starting with the implicit stats; +11 and +12 add 5% to all of them.
